Usually P0401/402 are to do with a bad DPFE sensor. What you can do to test if it really is giving too much flow is pulling the vacuum tube off the top of the egr and feel for suction at idle. There should be none. If there is then you need to replace the EVR valve (EGR vacuum solenoid). 99% of the time the DPFE sensor must be replaced though.

The DPFE sensor is by the EGR valve, it will have one connector and two silicone hoses attached to it, the other ends of the hoses attaches to the EGR tube (from manifold to EGR valve). Verify both hoses are attached and not broken or split. Verify the connector is OK/properly connected, no pins are pushed out/no corrosion/water intrusion etc.
A solid plate "fixes" a faulty or leaking EGR valve by effectively disabling it a new EGR valve could cost £120+ and who knows what extortionate price Ford will charge you to fit it/ set it up - the plate is aboout £5 (+ the engine will run better with the EGR blanked or disabled ) I recommend a solid, stainless steel plate.
